Fact Check: Photo Does NOT Prove Elena Ceaușescu Was Ráhel Orbán's Grandmother Not Related

Does a family photo prove that Elena Ceaușescu, the wife of deposed Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, is the grandmother of Ráhel Orban, the eldest daughter of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán? No, that's not true: The woman seen in the picture is not Elena Ceaușescu. It is in fact Sára Sipos Lászlóné Bujda, Ráhel Orbán's late great-grandmother.

The claim appeared in a TikTok video on December 30, 2023. The post is no longer available on the platform, but can be viewed in archived format here. It compares two photos: One of Elena Ceaușescu and another of a woman who slightly resembles her sitting next to Ráhel Orbán. It says (translated from Hungarian to English by Lead Stories staff):

Ráhel's granny is none other than Mrs. Ceau

The image on the left is a file photo of Elena Ceaușescu that is widely available on the internet (for example, here). The photo on the right shows Sára Sipos Lászlóné Bujda, Ráhel Orban's great-grandmother. It appeared in Hungarian tabloid Blikk in a 2016 article on the baptism of Ráhel's baby daughter (archived here).

Elena Ceaușescu was executed alongside her husband during a short revolution against his communist regime on December 25, 1989 (archived here). The couple was charged with crimes against humanity.

Ráhel Orbán was born on May 18, 1989 (archived here). It is therefore unlikely that she could have had her picture snapped with Elena Ceaușescu as an adult.

CORRECTION: The original version of this debunk said the TikTok post claimed that Elena Ceaușescu was Ráhel Orbán's great-grandmother and Viktor Orbán's grandmother. The post in fact claims that Elena Ceaușescu was Ráhel Orbán's grandmother and does not mention Viktor Orbán. The body of the story and the headline have been edited to reflect this.
